Autonomous vehicles will follow whatever assumptions we give them. Given that they will, for the first decade at least, largely be operating alongside human-driven vehicles, chances are they will have exactly the same constraints.

I'd be surprised if autonomous vehicles are allowed to drive faster than manual vehicles any time soon.



They have lower reaction times than humans, therefore they need lower safety distances to the car in front of them which can improve traffic flow.

There are significant efficiency gains that can be obtained on highways and for road convoys.
