I never heard of anyone in the US using "an herb" and I've lived my entire life there. Also never heard the 'h' not being pronounced. I mostly lived in the East/Midwest, so perhaps the pronunciation differs elsewhere by region.


I grew up in the American South and always heard "herbs" pronounced without the H, and correspondingly "an herb" was used.
