I think the goal should be a lossless format for audio,video, and images so that the loss that keeps occurring over time as these objects are recompressed with lossy formats doesn't occur. PNG was that for images but now someone is suggesting a lossy format, of course it looks fine the first time but then when the next compression comes out and people move to that you incur another loss.
