I'm not trying to defend his actions but I do want to defend a sane persons option to change their mind in light of more evidence / information. You don't just quit. You re-examine your priorities and adjust your outlook.

Adjust, not abandon. And if you do abandon your stance, you owe it to your constituency to reveal the evidence and explain your change in reasoning.
