"In comments, it's ok to ask how to read an article and to help other users do so. But please don't post complaints about paywalls. Those are off topic."

"Please don't post insinuations about astroturfing, shilling, brigading, foreign agents, and the like. It degrades discussion and is usually mistaken. If you're worried about abuse, email hn@ycombinator.com and we'll look at the data."

Right. It is useful for people to know if an article is paywalled. It saves time.

Your first comment misses the guideline:

> But please don't post complaints about paywalls

(Perhaps you missed rendx pointing this out first). Your question about the downvotes ("Has someone got sock puppet accounts on here?") misses the guideline:

> Please don't post insinuations about astroturfing, shilling, brigading, foreign agents, and the like

(Which rendx also pointed out). And the guideline:

> Please don't comment about the voting on comments. It never does any good, and it makes boring reading.

Who sets these guidelines and how can they be changed? Or am I not allowed to discuss that either? Would be helpful to know.

It's also helpful to know when there is a paywall. Not obstructive.

The moderators maintain (but don't dictate) the guidelines. You can find out how to contact them from.. the guidelines.

It would be nice to know what the procedure is. Preferably something better than just "your comments have been noted".
