Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 (youtube.com)

I seriously don't know how Sasaki can stand there and claim they redesigned this from the ground up to be an entirely new console instead of a hardware refresh. I mean, all they really did is add one controller button for social stuff. The rest is QoL and performance improvements. Add backwards compatibility (even for the new features like game sharing) and this is literally just the Switch HD that people were begging for. If you want a true new Nintendo console, I guess you'll have to wait quite a while longer. That is if Nintendo hasn't gone full Sony/MS and starts releasing revisions only instead of innovating from now on. Heck, they even copied the separately sold Playstation camera. It's kind of a heartbreaking precedent when you think about it.

Can something not be "redesigned from the ground up" and ... still be similar to something else?

There's a difference. I'm sure this hardware refresh will appeal to more people than, say, the PS5 pro - even when we're disregarding the marketing approach they're apparently going for. In particular because people begged just for this for years. But let's not pretend that it is anything more than that.

What's the difference?

Just visuals?

I've re-designed code from the ground up, but you'd never know it based on looks...

Have you ever tried to sell that kind of code update to a customer? They usually expect something like improvements or at least changes instead of merely juggling backend components behind closed doors to put a new price tag on it.

Yes I have.

Then congrats, I guess you too could work for Nintendo now.

No word on whether the old controllers are compatible with the new system. Obviously, they can not attach, but nothing stops them from being usable.

This is important for some games like "Ring Fit" that require dedicated hardware.

They will be compatible

> Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers and peripherals, such as the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, will also be usable on Nintendo Switch 2 by connecting them wirelessly to the system.

Retro Studios stand alone when it comes to strangling every last bit of performance out of a piece of hardware. Metroid Prime 4 running at 120 FPS is going to be phenomenal.

Great time to buy Switch OLED
