Chuck Moore's alternative to the modern OS is Color Forth. The man is brilliant and he is also a crank in the way brilliant people can sometimes be. When he says "you" he's really referring to programmers (and he's still wrong about that). I don't think the category of "non-programmers who use computers" is a significant part of his analysis.
