[flagged] My 2024 Setup (nullonerror.org)
28 points by delduca on March 21, 2024 | hide | past | favorite | 26 comments

Personally been working on replacing “brew” with “nix” for package management. Eventually using VMs spun up with qemu to emulate nixOS on my Mac for primary dev environment.

Similar to hashicorp founder setup found here (except hoping to not use “parallels or vm ware fusion”: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ubDMLoWz76U

I want to give nix a try!

> Unfortunately, I have to maintain my Google account to use YouTube

Strictly speaking this is not necessary. There are third party clients which don't require a Google account: Invidious for the web and NewPipe for Android. No idea about iOS.

Why was this submission marked as flagged? Was this post against the rules?

(I am not the submitter or author)

I’ve found that mise (formerly known as rtx) is a better alternative to asdf:

I've replaced brew with devbox which is a wrapper around nix. It's really great, and I very rarely have to break the abstraction. Very excited for future advances in this area as nix itself is a nightmare but the idea is amazing.

This has exactly zero useful content. It’s just a bounch of links, no added value.

I disagree. Just by looking at the link names, I realized the OP has a similar preference and job role, which made me explore some other options I was not familiar with. I’m sorry this didn’t work for you. But I discovered two new options to evaluate (Bear and Bruno).

It’s these little random posts that sometimes bring significant values.

Is anyone else using Bear for notes? Curious what people’s take on it might be, I’ve been thinking about trying to bring all of my various note taking under one roof, so to speak.

It might not be the best tool, but since I use it as a markdown editor, I also utilize it as a notes keeper with tags. In Bear, when you type #something, the hashtag immediately appears in the sidebar. I have many tags, including python, work, today, go, sql, and others.

The killer feature for me is the iCloud sync and the fantastic iOS app, allowing me to read and write notes on any device.

I want to hear more about how OP uses Zed. What languages are you using?

Last time I reviewed zed it just did not have enough features to replace VSCode or IntelliJ.

I have been using Zed with TypeScript, though I sometimes had to restart it due to an error that, once fixed, was still marked as an error.

With Go, it's great!

For Python, I need to add a `pyrightconfig.json` with the path of the virtual environment, which is a known issue.

Recently, I've also dabbled a bit with Rust, which has been exceptionally good.

For LaTeX, I still use VSCode, but apart from that, I rarely open VSCode.

P.S. Zed is far from being as mature as VSCode, but for my purposes, it's more than sufficient.

I'm also looking to switch off gmail to my own domain but the surplus of email providers give me analysis paralysis.

mxroute is the best one with reasonable pricing and no shitty investors trying to "grow and pack and sell" them ...

Mxroute seems like it has more manual configuration than I'd like to do but I'll give it a deeper look. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the tip on OrbStack. Looks great.

I've been using it for a few months now at work and on my personal machines. It's been solid, and remarkably performant compared with Docker Desktop.

opengl support would be just very very nice!

Curious on if others have switched from vscode to Zed and can share their experiences

Now, I only open VSCode by mistake in the terminal when I accidentally type "code ." instead of "zed .".

any tips on making the jump to Kagi? I've been considering using it for a while now and it's just been inertia keeping me on Google

Once you change your browser default doesn't the inertia point in the other direction?

A bit off topic, but I just set my default search in Firefox to Kagi...

and shortly after that I see this ad for the first time on my Firefox new tab page:

https://imgur.com/a/jNhgRxI

install the plugin and enjoy? what specifically is keeping you?

if you just type in the search bar it will automatically use Kagi so there isn't really any friction.

I am surprised to see people already switching to Zed when imo it isn't ready enough to be a replacement to vscode yet
