I can’t speak for parent directly but I’ve been involved in recruiting for remote and it’s not unusual.
They might employ in some countries (e.g. U.K.) and not accept contractors from that country. In that case, the employee would need a visa sponsorship to be employed. That’s how my employer works and it simplifies the administration a lot.
