The commonly held belief currently seems to be that you can't beat the markets. I've found this too narrow-minded. True, you can hardly beat the markets in their own game, but you can find a game where you're the one with the information advantage.

The commonly held belief is that you can't beat the markets consistently on a risk-adjusted basis, which is a much weaker statement. Furthermore, the idea that all private information is accounted for in the current price only holds in very strong variants of the EMH.
I don't even disagree with what you're saying, but it's entirely uncontroversial.
