For a lot of things, I've learned to step back, and let trained designers come up with a lot of this kind of thing. They don't always do things the way that I would, and I sometimes need to bite my tongue, but I think it's important to let them dictate things like graphic design and UI.
Most of my interaction is designing the software with as many "hooks" as possible, and also acting as an agent of the platform UI standards (in my case, Apple).
