It's mind-boggling to me that something like that can be "discovered". It's certainly "discovered" because it relies on a particular setup that relies on specific low-level features of C. Perhaps I would have denoted it as "invented" but the more I read about it, the more I realize that it probably doesn't qualify as something that was "invented" for the same reasons.
