Polonium is commonly found as a (v. minor) impurity in uranium, formed via natural nuclear decay. As coal plants burn massive amounts of coal, something on the order of 1.5 million tonnes per plant per year, even a small uranium impurity itself containing only a small amount of polonium can result in significant environmental release. Hence the oft-quipped 'coal plants release more radiation than nuclear plants' line.
