So he compared modern computers to 4 year old and then said worries of superhuman AI are overblown? That's kind of worrying. 4 year olds typically get a lot smarter.

That was an older comparison, he actually updated it to say that computers are worse, especially when it comes to general purpose tasks.

Agree. How far open does the barn door have to be before it goes from 'irresponsible' to 'responsible'? When does it become a matter of public interest?

What time scale is this guy assessing risk on? Does he have or expect grandchildren? Does he mind if the rest of us do?

I'd appreciate it if industry people like this could behave a little more... responsibly.

One concern is the prospect of AI overtaking human intelligence. Another one is the extent to which companies can employ these technologies on consumers? The latter have some much more present dilemmas that are both commercial and ethical. Companies naturally prioritizes the commercial aspect.

Just let me know where to sign the class action.

Decentralized anything will never work. Keep your trust in the banks and the corporations and the gov. They would never do anything that wasn't in your best interests.

That would be interesting. Basically instead of companies existing, make every project in the world an open source project on a blockchain and people get compensated for contributing directly as a consequence of how the blockchain works.

The problem of figuring out whether someone is the real person or an imposter (problem of identity) is a completely different problem from verifying a person's circumstances.

You gain control over the platform you're using. That's illustrated in the first paragraph of the Wired article.

People are getting pretty sick of getting pushed around by these mega corporations whether it's when they're telling you what software you're allowed to have on your cell phone or what you're allowed to write on a social media site. I think the next decade is going to be defined by an explosion in decentralized technologies.

Articles like this are more about suppressing the masses than anything else. You think the rich and powerful want the populace to be smart, able, and healthy? Think again bud.

There's no point to making college compulsory if the banks can't get rich off student loans.

What we should really do is drop all grading systems and test scores entirely. They are flat out bad for people's self esteem. So long as people show up to class sometimes they should get a special badge they can put on that says "I went to college!"

I honestly cannot tell if this comment is sarcastic. There are legitimate arguments for this approach as kids identify early with "bad at math" for example, and that sticks with them.

Couldn't you just do everything in UTC?

I'm not sure how that solves anything, since UTC would have the same issues as a UNIX timestamp.

I'd assume the correct thing to do is a vector clock, where each blocks time stamp is nothing more than a offset from the previous blocks.

It's easy to get most machines in agreement with how long a second is, but it's very very hard to get all nodes in agreement to what the exact time is.

So skip it entirely.
