Agree that this is definitely not new. There have been few variants of this play across the US. Trio (thinktrio.com), for example have been around for quite some time. I wonder though, if the typical HN reader is a great target market for this offering.
absolutely not true!! and other competitors like 3cx have been eating their lunch for years. the fact of the matter is FreePBX, even for the most knowledgeable audience is still a PITA to work with and configure.

Agree to disagree. I cut my teeth on freepbx; love it, miss it, constantly yell at my customers digium appliances in disappointment that they don't live up to their sibling. I rolled my old MSP over to it without any hassle and afaik they're still running it a few years later and I know none of them have touched it for admin. Rolled it on my VPS for my own consulting needs and it's pain free.
Digium was mostly a hardware company for a long time, which doesn't fetch the valuation of recurring SaaS revenue though they have hosted SaaS services now.
I do not think you need to be a US citizen just because you were born there. There are countries that allow a child born in the US to acquire the citizenship of its parents.
I can understand having to pay (in any of the ways you mention) if you are going to use the product. The question is, should I have to pay to even learn about the product?
I think this is needless alarmism. I am glad due process was followed, and what was previously a grey area has now been made clear.
You must read the judgement & the cases they cite before making such blanket, unsubstantiated assertions. There's been a history of cases that this judgement rests on, many of which guided & led to the conclusions drawn by this 9 panel of judges. [1]
I don't understand what value a blanket statement such as this adds to the conversation. Do you believe things were better in the 1970s? 1980s? If so, please substantiate your belief with evidence.
Do you subscribe to the trivial, cynical notion that our society is going to dogs? if so, let us have a conversation on why I disagree. But seemingly empty, vacuous but emotive statements such as these do not necessarily lend themselves to constructive discussion, IMO.
When considering the fact it took close to two years to even constitute a bench to hear this case, it doesn't really sound alarmist to me. Plus, many Aadhaar related cases have been pending hearing for years now while the government blatantly ignored multiple directives from the Supreme Court to keep it optional and not deprive anyone of any benefit "until the matter is decided one way or another" (paraphrasing what the court said).
Aadhaar could still be a fait accompli for the government and continue, which would be sad in many ways. If you believe Aadhaar is the best thing since sliced bread and has no issues, please check Rethink Aadhaar [1] for the issues as well as the history of the cases and have a look at Scroll's Identity Project. All the talk about latency has me wondering if the work here is eventually going to push telemedicine forward. Maybe a first aid kit that contains a tele-dressing kit that can be used by a remote worker to perform minor but intricate procedures?
I think that Whatsapp does not understand how the diehard users use it.
I live in India, one of whatsapp's biggest markets. I am stunned every day by the level of penetration that whatsapp has achieved here. From people in the slums to people over 65, everyone uses whatsapp. I regularly see long-form, local language content on whatsapp. I wonder who is writing all this. It reminds me of the early email days.
Whatsapp has wasted way too much time trying to cater to the snapchat demographic. But the snapchat demographic, either has not heard of Whatsapp (average US user) or thinks whatsapp is what you use to talk to grandma (the average Indian teenager).
They announced their intent to work on digital payments a full four months after demonetization was announced in India. No release yet (8 months and counting). They have probably squandered a massive opportunity here.
To my knowledge, they do not have any presence in India, their largest market. I wonder if that would have made all the difference.
I would. But I suspect that either your premiums will be so high for the risky sites (linkedin, facebook), that I could not afford it or I would clean up.
