Gregg here from Code School.. we actually tried making it autoscroll down at first. It was too distracting and annoying. Scrolling down when you're ready to continue just felt more natural.

I found another rare, but annoying thing - on German keyboards the "~" is hidden away on the combination "Alt Gr and +", when I try to type that into the prompt under Firefox 17.0 nothing happens. Workaround is to copy-paste. Under Chrome 23.0.1271.95 the same key-combination inserts single quotation marks, weirdly enough, same workaround.

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to go through the lesson using just a keyboard; a mouse is required to scroll or to change focus from the embedded interpreter back to the page itself so that the arrow keys will scroll.

Perhaps leave autoscroll as an option? I don't like having to type, move my hand to the mouse, scroll, move my hand to the keyboard, and repeat.

Many great points Jyri. This course certainly is not meant to be a completely detailed introduction. At Code School we're in the middle of working on something that should be more of a step by step introduction.

However, I think there's something to be said for showing people how they can be immediately productive with a tool before really understanding everything that's going on underneath. With just a few commands someone can start using git successfully, and that's all we were trying to communicate with this tutorial.

Nope, it needed a rewrite. We talked to Andrew who was hosting and helping maintain it, and he expressed interest in getting help. We did our best to stay true to _why, keep the same content, and keep it free.

Only real difference now is you have the ability to save your progress as you go using your Code School account. If you don't want to, you don't have to. =)

Sorry for the slowness. We were having issues with traffic earlier that didn't have much to do with Ruby, but it should be MUCH faster now. Let us know if you run into any other issues.

You probably hit the error when we had a spike in traffic. We just launched today, so thanks for your patience.

Try now! We were probably doing a deploy, and we've scaled up for the Hacker news crowd.

Looks like it's back to running quite slow and not taking some of the commands I enter.

Hey Andy.. looks like you were playing through when we hit a spike in traffic... However, things look like they're back to normal. Let me know if it's still slow for you.

Oh good, it's back! Thanks.

Perhaps that and http://CodeSchool.com ?
