The problem is that the Qatari state uses its blood money to buy publicity for itself and improve the optics of their slavestate by arranging lavish sports arrangements to project an air of wealth and prosperity when in fact it's nothing but a slavery powered kleptocracy.
I wonder how you could possibly be ok with this. Are you some kind of libertarian?
If a married woman gets raped in Qatar, she cannot report it to police, as that would lead to her getting the death penalty for adultery. That country is absolutely fucking horrible. Like, even places ad bad as India where men regularly attack women with acid pale in comparison.
So what is the problem?
Is it slavery?
Is it that quatar is hot?
Is it that quatar doesn't like LGBTQ?
Why new reasons come up in every comment rather than any justification for the parent comment at all?
Are you going to watch football or to marry someone?
And should you boycott US also where random people kill innocent children regularly for no reason?
From this discussions in this thread atleast the problem with quatar is nothing of what is mentioned. Westerners can't accept that a nation culturally so different from theris can host an important tournament. They can't accept that people's have different priorities different cultures and different way of looking at life. They can't accept that about 2 billion people of the world are having the most accesible world cup.
In short, they can't accept that world doesent exist just for westerners. Since they can't tell that openly due to being called out for racism, they come up with these reasons..
You are the one who is trying to turn around the discussion all the time. So give me some straight answers:
You think punishing a woman for getting raped is acceptable?
You think punishing someone for being homosexual is acceptable?
You think treating workers building the Worldcup facilities like slaves by working them to death is acceptable?
Please give me straight yes/no answers to those. No more hand-wavy BS and then stating how accessible the Worldcup now is.
It's mind-bending how you can turn around and call criticizing these things a proxy for racism, or that it's just cultural difference.
> And should you boycott US also where random people kill innocent children regularly for no reason?
You're already admitting here how different it is. You say random people, and that's what it is. Individual people or a group of people misbehaving, acting against the law which can and does get prosecuted. Not always unfortunately, and there are systematic problems that need to be addressed, but unlike Qatar's many crimes against humanity, they are not institutionalized and written in law. Again, the West is by far not perfect, but compared to these kind of countries, we've come a very long way.
Am not telling that is acceptable. Am just telling that this is a football World Cup. Not a a cultural world cup.
And any nation including European who has hosted it has done similar bad things in past. So are why outage only now?
Us went ahead and killed thousands of women and children in Iraq. So do you boycott sports in US.
UK still white washes colonialism in Schools. They have not apologized for jalianwalabagh massacre. Do you boycott them.
France still leeches money from poor countries in Africa. Do you boycott them.
And finally quatar and saudi uses slave labour and treats homosexuals badly. Do you boycott petroleum and natural gas.
Then why only boycott world cup in quatar
Many mobiles and textile manufacturing is with slave labour. So is chocolates and cofee. You consume them. So what's new about quatar.
Yes for me accesibility is important. Because my friends can watch it without spending a year of their earnings. If you can conduct World cups in uk is or France or Russia, then you can conduct in quatar too. Regards of openions reeking in hypocrisy and racism
Well, i certainly cannot address every single wrongdoing in existence, as a single person I cannot save the world through boycotts, obviously. But yes, I do call out the kinds of things you mention. I get into arguments with people who are unaware or ignorant to the wrongdoings of the west or their country in particular, and claim the west is perfect today. It's not. But it has come a very long way in the past century. I try to buy fair trade goods where possible, even if it's sometimes more than double the price. Did I travel to San Fernando to verify my coffee really comes from farmers that get treated fair? Of course not. I boycott all brands that advertise using the Qatar world cup. I boycott Nestlé. I'm trying to do the right thing without dedicating my life to it. So don't call me a hypocrite to deflect from the fact that you're putting your desire for an accessible world cup over basic human rights issues with the hosting country.
1. This is one of that ways to get more people interested in football. Majority of the population is in south asia and chinela, Quatar is quite close and this wc is very accessible for us
2. Why world cup is held in summer? Is it because Europe is cold in winter and Europeans prefer summer. Unfortunately world is not just Europe. Since this is WORLD cup why should it not be held in seasons that is suited where it is hosted?
3.Same as above. Football is popular across world.
4. May be this is to get football more popular in middle East. Why only conduct where it is popular now. Let's conduct where more young people are present.
5. Corruption in FIFA is not new. This is not specific to this world cup.
6. So what. May be Quatar is trying to be a sports destination of MENA. It's their money. Let them spend it the way they want.
7. So has a large number of people died in making the phones, clothes, chocolates, diamond, cofee or anything in Modern world. Do you stop using phones and clothes because of that?
I come from Kerala in india where a large population emigrate to Arab countries including Quatar. Heck even my uncle was there at some point. People go to these places because they pay well. May be not as much as western world would like, but much more than we make here. So i don't give too much importance to the stories about slave labour and everything.
8. Are you coming to watch football or to promote pride culture?
The world cup is held in the summer because that's when no other football is going on. It's that simple. Moving the WC to november not only ruins the WC, but ruins the entire rest of the football season. And even doing it in November it's just too hot.
> In IIT, while there was cutthroat competition for general category seats, SC/ST (reserved category) seats went unfilled since in the IITs there was (not sure if it still is there) a min standard was required.
Even with this low bar SC&ST are unable to get in. It shows how disadvantaged they are as a population.
How the empty seats of SC/ST in the IITS reflect that they are disadvantaged? They have much less cut off, many SC/ST give the exam, their fees is much much less than the general category, they get scholarships. How are they disadvantaged ?
My brother living in his hamlet has no electricity after 8pm, has 0 access to coaching and has little to no access to books or anything related.
This is circa 2000s though.
The village has affluent upper caste people while the lower caste people still do menial jobs
Reservations are meant for them. But the city folk who have the most knowledge and access to money abuse this system while real poor lower class people aren't able to access.
I knew of an economically backward class person who wore woodlnd shoes. My parents couldn't afford those shoes, his did yet he had woodland shoes.
Moral of the stort: city folk abuse reservation system caste or economic terms because it takes a 5k bribe to a local govt to fake your income certificate, lot of people I know have done it.
My dad worked in a govt firm, his colleague who earned the same money was lower class so his daughter who got marks exactly as same as mine got a stellar college and ANY branch she wanted, but I wasn't a girl & backward on paper so I had to settle for what I got
True that the reservation system gets abused a lot in India. Living in North India, I frequently see rich families enjoying reservation benefits even when they don't need it. They don't realise they are eating up positions for the people who really need it. And the children of these rich families that the reserved seat as something they are entitled to and not affording any respect for the opportunity.
It's infuriating that reservations have become so abused, but any step by any party to change it would be met with such a fierce opposition that it's literally impossible to change.
Ofc here assumption being made is that college is the deciding factor of success later in life.
Most backward cast candidates will be unable to forge deeper connection with powerful ellite caste people and they'll suffer in networking/connection game.
Education is just one of the many factor, if you don't have connections - you can't get people to believe you or invest in your business, your paper degree isn't going to do much.
Historically, new connections (both social and business) were forged based on marriage which was limited to marrying within specific cast. As a result power accumulated through network effect in hands of a few.
No matter how much education you put in backward cast candidates they are not able to get inside "ellite" network of upper caste people.
I'll give you a counter example, one of my friend dropped out after highschool and another one (backward cast) got degree from IIT university.
Today highschool upper caste person has more wealth and married to a local celebrity while the backward one is at government office and he hates his job, only people he party with are people of his own communities. Many times he's not invited to the private parties by his bosses. On paper tho, you might envy his job but socially tho he's an outcast - it's not changing soon either. He himself acknowledged, he's only boss at work but outside work, no one gives him much respect.
>>I knew of an economically backward class person who wore woodlnd shoes. My parents couldn't afford those shoes, his did yet he had woodland shoes.
Woodland shoes last years, in most cases the only reason you thrown them away because you are bored, they refuse to wear out no matter what you do with them.
I come from a fairly lower-middle class, poor background(Dad was a truck/bus/cab driver over years). I was donated used woodland shoes by a relative during my engineering days. I wore them for years, like even years after I had a job. And I used to walk kilometers during my college days every day.
If you are poor/lower mid income class student. Woodlands is some thing you should consider buying. Its really buy and forget. Also wear jeans, even if you buy cheap ones. I had a pair, I wore them so much the pockets started tearing out. Do this and you can go expense-less for years. This is my version of ramen profitability.
If you are thinking frugality invest in quality. Lower mid class students must invest in woodlands.
Well, poor people who have to choose between Food and Rent i.e. really economically backwards can't afford woodland shoes and a new fancy phone every other month!
Alao for that matter, Sparkx sandals and shoes too last years, much cheaper option..
I get what you are trying to say. But this is generally the story of every first generation learner, even if they aren't lower caste. I have seen these kind of situations all around me in the past, my dad only used to own a bicycle, worked hard, passed the exam (general category) and now have a decent house. Everybody who is economically is suffering but this doesn't mean that reservations are the only way/help to succeed
There is also the effect of first generation learners. Many don't have the benefit of parents and family with a background in education who can mentor. That's quite a big deal.
Any proofs, incidents, facts, figures to support your accusations?
> The regulatory capture of TRAI by JIO is very well known
It is very well known in the same vein as "Bush did 9/11", "George Soros is the boss of Illumnati", "Zuckerberg is a lizard human", "Freemasons rule the world", "Area 51 has aliens", etc. Essentially baseless urban myths.
1. Which democracy in the world do-not have corruption?
2. Where in the article is the mention about government intervention in Judiciary? I read it, but could not find it.
> Free and fare Judiciary and democratic institutions are fundamental to a democracy. I hope this substantiates the original comment.
Your original comment was that India's democracy is close to Putin's Russia. I agree that India being a young democracy need to develop better institutions. However it is not comparable to anything in Russia.
If you really want to compare, why don't you specifically list what happens in a mature democracy like UK, compare that to what is happening in RUSSIA and then show similar issues in India, while also showing that it does not happen in any of the model democracy you have in your mind.
Corruption is a common denominator whether it is a democracy or autocracy. In Democracies citizens have the ability to practice democratic rights. A fundamental right in democracy is the freedom of speech.
In India though people who protest against government policies are sent behind bars without any due process. For instance in the past yr many social activists have been sent to Jail for protesting against the CAA bill, a bill which seeks to give citizenship to people based on their religion. The activists who protested have been jailed for protesting. For instance
Rohingyas from Myanmar are not similar to Buddhists from Pakistan due to one single reason. Myanmar was not divided from India. Nor has Indian govt made any promise on protection anytime.
Hence India does not have any obligation to people from Myanmar apart from Humanitarian concern. That particular concern is common to all the world. If Europe or US have that concern, I do believe that they can accept Rohigyas similar to how they accepted a large number of Syrians
When India was divided, prime minsters of India and Pakistan [Liaquat–Nehru Pact] agreed on treating their respective minorities well. Without this agreement the minorities[Hindus, Sikhs etc in Pakistan] living in each country could have choose to move to the other[India in this case].
Hence passing CAA is just accepting the fact that Indias neighbors are not treating minorities well as they promised and delivering the promise that was made during independence.
Critical security fixing time is years, not days. Also in practice, a lot of people use PPAs to get work done, and this is a critical component in an audited system.
