If interested in the topic I can recommend Alan Arnette's blog http://www.alanarnette.com/ I've found it one of the best sources of what's happening on Everest.
Very interesting if this plays out. NSN would have capability to offer full stack mobile networks made all from in house equipment. NSN probably sees this as a tool to fight Ericsson, also Alcatel probably does this already.
On the IP security side Nokia has history in firewalls with their IPSO business, which was sold to Check Point in 2008.
I remember hearing that this is because there was once a fire in a church and almost everyone inside were killed. This was caused by inward opening doors getting blocked from opening due masses of people trying to push their way out in panic.
It is actually into the hundreds of millions, and that is just governments killing their own people, not inter-state wars. Rummel puts this number at 262M.
That's probably because governments enforced a monopoly on weapons. Do you think the world would be better if we allowed companies to raise private armies of mercenaries?
I think it depends on if you're talking about expected case or worst case.
In the U.S., companies will act out of their own selfish interests, but in theory the government can address the concerns of the citizens in areas the citizens don't have sufficient power themselves ("by the people, for the people", etc). If the government is focused on regulating the industry, the "serf" ownership model won't be transitive from the companies to the government. Hopefully the companies would act as a barrier and the government would never get them as direct minions.
But obviously the government could abuse this position. Then it's a question of which one would be the purest evil given the chance.
I heard the Instagram hype all over internets and tried the software, but deleted it right away when I saw it required an account. I can see why they are doing this, but from my perspective it's just greedy. No need to integrate everything, I just want to take some pictures not register to a service. Soon we will have calculator apps that force you to make super-calc-account where you can share your calculations with your friends...
