What about services like Uber which are used extensively by lower income people and only exist due to VC subsidy?

Is there evidence that low income people spend less on transportation bc of Uber? It's still hyper expensive compared to public transit and car ownership (if driving daily).

I'm pretty sure he meant that Uber drivers' pay is subsidized through VC funding, not that Uber rides are practical for people with a lower income.

If anyone is interested in helping this project along there is an indiegogo page (below). I have no vested interest in this project, I simply think it's a great use of new tech with an altruistic bent.

I don't think this article gives nearly enough credence to the amazing pool of information that Facebook is. It's brilliant for organising social events and keeping track of people, it doesn't have to be a great evil. Used responsibly it is on of the best things about the internet.

"Moderation in all things"

When Facebook is used as a substitute for friendship, it can be very, very bad. The article focused on that side of Facebook -- the teen angst, grass-is-always-greener, add "friends" to get ahead in FarmVille side.

When Facebook is used as a tool to support existing friendships, it can be very, very good. It's helped me stay informed of what my family is up to, reconnect with some old friends, and organize various social events. The article completely missed that side of Facebook.

To those whose experience matches the first paragraph, the problem isn't the tool, it's the users. It's a classic case of "you're doing it wrong".

Two of the scans didn't complete for me. Anyone else?

Real time editing looks brilliant! I wonder how they pulled it off...

I am concerned by the revelation that all the program and user data will be held on the Google servers. Sure, it makes for a very secure back-up and the speed it will achieve on smaller machines will be astounding, but do I need one company to have ownership of all my data/information?

Can someone reassure me?

Perhaps they could incorporate some homomorphic encryption so that your data can be processed in the cloud without it being readable.

Obliviously computing over encrypted data has a lot of potential, but there are still many technical barriers to overcome before it's practical on a large scale.

If you're talking about Gentry's fully homomorphic encryption, that's not going to be used in practice any time soon.

that's "because they are not evil", you know... People who are supporting Chrome cite they won't be 'locked in to Windows' as a key point, but they don't realize that the lock-in, in this case, will be A LOT worse..

Yeah - the bits most people create are hardly worth the platters they sit on. Chrome OS is for them. The people whose entire online existence consists of forwarded emails and flash games.

Did anyone else find that women hard to listen to? She had a jarring quality to her presentation. I'm glad I wasn't there for an hour!

I enjoyed this immensley. I tried to make a kingdom of "x"s.
