Haha that's pretty awesome. I have dedicated this year to simplicity and building my company's new website in Hugo with plain vanilla javascript.

More and more I am going back to simple tools. The simpler the better. I think using a pure text file with the basic GNU command line tools is very powerful and more flexible than anything. Just remember to keep it in git!

Ruby was created in the mid-90s, long before Ruby on Rails became the killer app.

Yes, I was thinking about that case. While Ruby was comparatively still a modern language at that point, Rails used the metaprogramming of the language to effectively create a new unique language on top of it with it's opinionated design. It might be even a point in favor of Lisp, since even in an older language like Common Lisp it can still be possible to build a new language on top that feels modern, maybe some kind of tidyverse environment for handling the next AI wave paradigm whatever it may be.

Hong Kong, at least, is Chinese and always have been. The British leased the New Territories(90% of Hong Kong) from the Qing Dynasty. Hong Kong island is the only colonial possession, but it's too small to even fit an airport. So the Brits gave it up.

> Hong Kong, at least, is Chinese and always have been

That doesn't mean anything. Does it belong to the Chinese in the Communist party? Or the Chinese that live in Hong Kong?

You’re thinking Democratically. Geopolitically, HK belongs to China, the historically established state of which Beijing is the capital.

So do you think Hong Kong 'belonged to Japan' when that was the realpolitik?

Beijing might control HK now, but by acknowledging the tyrant's claim, we give them power.

Beijing is the capital of the PRC, not 'China'. There are many Chinas, the PRC does not have a monopoly on the name.

Hong Kong belongs to it's people.

That's not true, Kowloon was a colonial possession not under lease.

Yeah, it's a drop in the sea.

Teletext have more than a million users in Denmark. Truly surprising to me but it is also kinda awesome. It certainly still serves a purpose. No ads, no noise just pure signal.

On the site [1] of the NOS (dutch broadcast foundation) there is even a big button in the header. Clicking trough the news items on the site is very slow compared to clicking trough news items on the Teletekst app.

[1] https://nos.nl

The swedish teletext is still also very popular. It's like the original internet and the internet for old people.

Even funnier: us semi-greybeards that do use this other internet, often still use teletext via app/web browser because it's such pure information.

It's news/weather/ and other info in curated and distilled form. Example: https://www.svt.se/svttext/web/pages/101.html

German Teletext is filled with ads. FIND WOMEN IN YOUR AREA is what I consider ads.

The TV stations not broadcasting from Denmark, and not funded (at least partially) by public money had similar ads. Either for adult services, or betting.

What most view as "the real teletext" is the service provided by DR (Danmarks Radio), the Danish equivalent of the BBC. They are not allowed to show ads anywhere.

Anything about nuclear war just scares the shit out of me. It is fascinating but extremely scary. It is the first time I have seen this and even the helmets looks scary.

Yep deeply scary. Reading the bit about the eye patch really sent a chill down my spine - "Oh in case you are permanently blinded in one eye, take the eye patch off and you can continue to fly your plane until you have to crash land it somewhere since all the airports have been totally destroyed and everyone you know was incinerated. Sir yes sir."
