if you've "not used it" how can you say it's "worse" and "slow"?


What I mean is not used in any of my projects or work. I have accessed it when working on Elm, and after loading it once cannot even understand why Elm a language which wants 0 runtime error in JavaScript can even accept such a slow system. Even if Elm wanted wanted a web user interface on top of IRC, they could have gone with discord app (although personally I still prefer IRC), which is far far ahead of slack when it comes to quality, latency and works much faster.

But doesn't matter in a hurry to replace e-mail with something different companies are choosing much worse solution like Slack. Email, IRC are very good. Slack is a product of spending millions on advertising and marketing and be loss making for as long as possible and than list it to let it gamble on stock exchange or get acquired by bigger company.

Wyoming gets 2 senators, same as California - which means their residents get massively MORE representation at the federal level.

States are entities of political significance, regardless of how many people happen to live in them. This is a union of states, and states get a say. If you don't believe that consider advocating for the replacement of states with population based administrative districts.

This is such an overwhelmingly stupid statement. It's effectively "if you don't like it, then leave."

Wyoming is not as desirable as California in many ways. People don't want to go there. Just because it's not as desirable doesn't mean it should get arbitrary favoritism when it comes to elections.


First off, abide by HN guidelines please.

Second its only your perception that it receives favoritism, because of your mistaken interpretive frame that sees electoral college electors as being about individual citizens instead of as a compromise between two sets of stakeholders: states and the citizens living in them. Until you recognize that states themselves have an interest in Federal elections, you will continue to misunderstand the role the EC plays.

Fairness isn't a simple concept. There can be many mutually incommensurable notions of fairness. Unfortunately, partisans pick and choose those that suit their interests best.

Just as an example from domestic life. Consider a family of 4 individuals with different caloric requirements. One notion of fairness would split a pizza pie into four equal portions, but another would split it in proportion to their caloric needs. Getting everyone to agree on the notion that should be operant is hard because each choice implies winners and losers.

If you don't think states interest in Federal elections shouldn't count for anything, say so, and then give some thought about whether you think states should just be replaced with population based administrative districts that change with the census.

This argument is really flawed. How is it different from: "I only take one road to and from work, why should I pay for roads other people take?"


The roads are funded by road-tax. You only pay for the roads if you use them. They are not funded from income-tax. That is a fair system.


Are we still talking about France? Wasn't the vignette abolished some time ago and now, I guess, funding comes from tolls? (Which I guess you can call "road tax", just confused by the vernacular)

I think all the new Dodge models (even base trim) have keyless these days as well. Hopefully it it catches on for all makes, it's a pretty nice feature.

Don't discount something just because it's quickly written. Strong emotions are a powerful source of artistic inspiration. Sometimes, you can create in 5 minutes something which hours or months or even years of labour could not equal.

I like to think he had mowed grass. That is what a common man does in the U.S., and it would be a sign of his humanity. I also like to think he just wore the shoes because he was sick, in pain, and he needed a comfortable pair of shoes.

Overall something about Gruber's piece felt off to me. But none of us is a perfect writer and this is an emotional time.

Yes. That's how mac works. The instant anyone ever purchases an apple product, they are irrevocably an apple zealot.

Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't organized into a massive armed malita, given the amount of hatred and bigotry apple fanboys bring to a discussion. It seems like the complete solidarity of everyone to ever pass a credit card to Apple would make them a formidable force.
