what funny is i just started using fedora (and i have actually been really enjoying it).. but to help me remember its not apt or rpm or even yum i have been thinking to myself Do Not Follow - for no reason at all other than i first learned about it after installing a new machine and configuring firefox etc. :)
Point 4 is an import one for me in many discussions:
- we are not talking about a blank slate, we are talking specifically about position X in this very specific path from an animal to.... something
we cannot judge others without remembering their entire upbringing and the fact that to operate we need to use rules of thumb as there is not enough processing power in the universe to do it any other way.
Really trying to accept this helps me take number 4 there to a very real place where i absolve myself of being "right" and focus on "trying to improve things and give an honest account of the results to help us all move forward".
Thinking of this in terms of others ideologies - we cannot logically think through what is right or wrong, so we NEED people to believe "wrong" things as we develop / evolve to ensure we are correct. negative testing is tedious but very very important.
I this value in trying "provably" wrong things is a real part of what causes us to be who we are (e.g. it could be partially responsible for stubbornness and counter culture for example)
i actually really hope things like this are more successful and gain traction in the future.
I always thought there may be ways to apply IEC 61508 more widely (if it can include mental or non physical damage) but i am sure there are probably quite a few ways of approaching this.
to be fair could this not be any app on his phone that is listening?
I assume that the big ad aggregators like google etc. would be up for integrating with anyone who provided testably good data, and also it may be that the system is being gamed from the other end.. where hints are passed to the ad bidding bot (of the dog toy company) to pay more for your attention.
its a pretty crappy state of affairs we have.. its a shame that our media (and so much of everything) is owned by so few - it makes it very hard to fight against any of this :( no one has any interest in actually fixing this or making big changes as they are all using it to power their growth and so their delusional valuations.
There was nothing more depressing than working as a BA for a big company and realising that every metric was openly being gamed, objectives were stupid and impossible to meet - but it didn't matter as so long as they kept a constant suite of major structural change projects on the go (buying companies, moving profits and ownership over boarders etc.) they could meet all of their targets and just keep the lies going.
The lower level staff had to play along as their managers would fire them if they didn't play the game. the managers had to keep to the line to maintain their promoted state and keep moving up.. the most senior management could just believe the numbers and fire a middle manager if they didn't like what they got. and the shareholders didn't care as if the targets are hit the share-price just keeps rising and rising.
There was no case i could make to do anything about this, I think i proved the issue to several people but there was no way of people doing anything about it without damaging their own lot :(
Since then I have had much more understanding with the broken nature of the world, how long it will take to fix and how sometimes (often) you really do just need to let the wheels come off before there will be any action - as by that point people are less worried about being blamed and are more likely to act.
payment to musician = total spotify views for that artist / total spotify listens for all users * total payment to artists / total spotify listens for all users.
therefor even though you may exclusively listen to one artist on spotify you are in fact mostly giving money to the most listened to artist - which in turn tend to have the highest percentages going to distributers and labels.
Spoifty have shockingly bad invasions of privacy in their software and t&cs plus they give my long tail money to the lowest common denominator. i mean i could be wrong but they just seem like a terrible option.
I used to have a spotify account but these days i use the same money to buy from bandcamp or something the artist does as directly as possible and i often pay over the asking price. if the artist doesnt sell direct i will look for a second hand CD or similar and rip it.. in the mean time there is always youtube (where at least the ad revenue may be going to the artist).
I feel like all spotify would have had to have done would be to respect your privacy and have your money go to the artist you support and they would have been bullet proof - but maybe they major labels would never sign up to these terms?
not seen all of the series but it seems to be mashing together the first few books.
IMHO they are probably better than the series but they start getting not so good at some point - I cannot remember if i have read them all but i do remember it getting a bit boring / dragged out towards the end.
it is ultimately in that class of media where the goal is not so much about saying something to telling a story as it is about making an ongoing revenue stream.
I generally stick away from this stuff but sci-fi books seem to all be going this way these days :(
I browse without javascript all the time, sometimes i need to switch to another browser to buy something from some random site, but generally its just a faster better internet with very dodgey sites self selecting themselves out of my usage.
If there is one or two sites i really want to use in my main browser that need JS i can white list that site - but only exactly that site.
I am not an expert but it seems a better experience to me and i don't really think it make me less secure?
the teacher example is a total embarrassment! that lady was straight up lucky, the article linked to doesnt say she was an amazing saver it says that she was a messy hoarder who happened to come from a rich family that meant that the trash she didnt tidy up was worth lots of money.
Also it looks like half or more of th emoney cam from a relative that happeded to move in with her yeaars before dying.
the lady got given a house to live in for free and had no requirement for money.
This article can be summed up as: long term efforts chipping away at something can ALSO pay off.
I am yet to see a success story that is not heavily leaning on situation or luck. our system is simply not fair and i really tire of bullshit like this trying to pretend that it has some purpose or value beyond exploitation.
nope.. that is the point of these laws - if you are doing decent stuff they don't really make a difference. if you are doing dodgey stuff you just have to tell people you what you are up to.. but dodgey people don't like telling people they are dodgey - hence all the moaning!
in my opinion this is a total misunderstanding of the situation:
1. people are being taken advantage of
2. law is introduced to make it harder to take advantage of people
3. scummy people still try and take advantage by trying to confuse their users
and now please tell me why i should be on the scummy person side again?
you don't need a cookie notification if you don't serve cookies for other people. and you don't need any GDPR notifications if you are not selling sharing or needlessly storing peoples data.
you are going to websites run by scummy people, that is the problem not the law.
in essence if you are not shitty to people these laws really don't have much impact.
