SEEKING VOLUNTEERS: https://PianoGym.com

Here's a quick video explaining it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faxNDhOjlh4

Piano Gym is a learning and practice ecosystem focused on prioritizing music theory and performance skills acquisition through the use of flash cards and sheet music. We use flash cards in order to pair them with modern learning techniques like spaced repetition, graded feedback, and progress tracking so that you can practice material and work through content that is managed by Piano Gym, and all you have to do is enroll in a school/course/lesson and do your reps! Just show up every day and do 15 minutes of reviews. You're going to make progress.

Our website uses the Piano to navigate exercises as well as regular keyboard/mouse input. We work on browser technology and are looking to eventually make it mobile devices.

We provide content creation for everyone so that anyone can make their own schools/courses/lessons and the best part is each school gets its own landing page.

For example we're using the methods book from https://freepianomethod.com which is provided by Mayron Cole, and if you wanted to practice it without signing up or enrolling you could easily visit this link: https://pianogym.com/schools/Mayron%20Cole%20Method

Even better when you find the piece you want to practice you can share it directly like so: https://pianogym.com/schools/Mayron%20Cole%20Method?sheet_mu...

Our goal is to do this for free. We believe that no one should be blocked from learning. And one of the issues with this at the moment is that our team is very small and has been currently working nights and weekends to make this happen. We would love the chance to add a technical member to our team in order to build this product out to its full vision.

Areas of work we need help with

- UI/UX

- Refining the piano playing game feel

- Adding support for external piano pitch detection

- Creating a community

If you're interested please feel free to direct message me or my email DoYourReps@gmail.com

You forgot the .com in your url.

Thank you. This has been fixed :)

Piano Gym - It's really cool, and I wish I had someone technical to actually work on this together.

This looks incredible and very similar to an idea that I was kicking around a while back. Please email me (see profile). I'd love to contribute to this.

In particular, something that would widen access to this platform is a microphone-based input method for acoustic pianos. There are only a couple of commercial platforms that have this and AFAIK, no completely free ones have it. There are some challenges of course -- out of tune pianos, different types and makes and models sound different, variations in how the piano is mic'd, etc., but I believe those can be worked around and have some ideas about how to make it happen.

This is fantastic! I've been looking for a way to do this myself on my website https://pianogym.com!

Right now we rely heavily on MIDI input from the Web Audio API and it's been my dream to make it so any instrument can use the website!

You are so cool! Thank you for sharing this!

If you're interested - Piano Gym is looking for others who are interested in building out our existing website and tools

This looks really cool! I've been a pianist for 15 years, but most of that time, my practice has been in swings - a week with dozens of hours of practice, a month with none. I've been looking for a more incremental approach for me to practice daily.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!

Yeah. I made Piano Gym because I've seen several solutions for Piano/Music Theory and at the end of the day I really think having people create curriculums and setting progression while managing it is the best approach for intentional practice between autodidacts/teachers/learners.

One of the cool things is that we have a flash card creation tool that will automatically chop a piece of sheet music into flash cards of 1/2/3/n measures at a time so that you can make flash card sets to deliberately practice sections of a song. It's really cool! I'm still on the fence of how to leverage this effectively for learners, but I've been thinking about the idea of making 1 measure flash card sets, 2 measure, 3 measure, and then the full piece. In many ways I can do anything with Piano Gym and that's the problem for me now

Tweeted at you but copying here for visibility! Am a full stack dev, and enthusiast pianist and have hacked on some music software in the past. Would be interested in contributing!

Mostly comfortable in TS web frameworks, React / Angular / Node

If anyone is interested in seeing Spaced Repetition applied in different areas besides language and vocabulary. I have a free website called Piano Gym that lets you do use spaced repetition with Piano and sheet music.

It's pretty spiffy, and I can go on at length about it. I have a video explaining it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faxNDhOjlh4

And a long form interview explaining it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrDAC6ZYGHk

I personally use Piano Gym and I've found it to be pretty helpful in getting you to a point of practice and reading sheet music. But there's always more work to do for some of my more ambitious features. However it's a free tool and I have to make my money at my job. So enhancements come out slow.

I want you to know. You're not alone, and I feel the same things.

Hacker News is not the place to go if you're looking for cohorts who feel the same thing.

People on this website are ... I don't know the right word, but I think the best way to phrase it is - lacking the sensitivity and awareness to really step back and evaluate if technology has been making the world a better place. This isn't to say technology can't do that, but what the human race has been doing with technology really is a bummer. We have every means to push ourselves forward, step up, and take care of each other. Hell we're post scarcity! But everyone is running around doing VC this, startup that, and how everything is going to be changed my "my really great idea" which is stupid. I had a brother-in-law, an executive of his company bragging about how he was using some of the smartest people he ever knew solve logistic problems for maximizing profit in the stupidest ways. I reply to every recruiter explicitly asking them how each role they're offering is genuinely helping the world a better place. I explicitly go out of my way asking for jobs to fight climate change and no one responds.

Personally I am confounded by the money making impetus of everyone.

I FEEL exactly how you're feeling, and I'm not sure how to get away from it or fix the state of things.

A lot of people will come out of the woodwork and provide thought-terminating statements like "be the change you want to see", or "be the light", or anything else that's really meant as a way to disengage the discussion without really addressing the issues. And let me tell you I have put my best foot forward in my personal endeavors to create solutions and tools that really try to help others out. But at the end of the day, we all rely on each other to be the communities that help each other, and it's not up to one person to carry that weight. We all need to recognize that this isn't right, and the direction we're headed isn't right. And, this is completely ignoring the big elephant in the room that despite all the technological "advancements" we're making, the planet is burning alive, with us on it, and we really won't have anything in the coming years.

I'm rambling, and I don't have a solution or words of advice. But, I want you to know you're not alone. Feel free to reach out if you're ever looking for a cohort to chat with. We can be grumpy together.

Depends on your definition of success, but I have made a website called Piano Gym (https://PianoGym.cpm) to help people learn Piano and Music Theory in the context of actual sheet music.

I am looking for team members who believe in the dream product. This will not be paid, but eventually may be revenue generating. We have a patreon here right now: https://patreon.com/PianoGym

I need someone who can execute technically.

I need someone who can execute in a business management capacity.

Right now my bandwidth is limited and Piano Gym is finally coming out of stealth. I need someone who can help deliver milestones and help create a community of learners who want to grow with our platform.

Please contact us through our social media or at `DoYourReps@PianoGym.com`

Great! I had a similar idea a while back glad someone is doing it! Will it be open source? mostly curious what tech it is built upon.

Hey there! Thank you so much for the positive feedback!

At the moment it will not be open source, but in the future there will be efforts to open source it. If not open sourcing the code at least open sourcing the learning material for Piano Gym.

Please tell all your friends we really need the exposure!

Love it!

Love you! <3

Piano.

I learned Japanese for several years and decided to learn something new, but I wanted the same experience I had for learning Japanese. There's just an insane dearth of GOOD learning tools for Japanese.

It turns out there's good stuff for Piano too, but none hit the right spot. So I made my own learning tool called Piano Gym.

https://pianogym.com

Piano Gym is flash cards + midi piano + spaced repetition to teach you music theory and performance using actual sheet music and music theory tools.

It's SUPER cool, and I stream myself using it every day. I have a whole curriculum using a Piano method's book, so it's exciting to know that the content I'm going through is actually made by someone else.

I made a ShowHN post, but this site is weird, so if you're interested you can see that here.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27304875

Either way, it's pretty cool to learn using a tool I created. Excited to keep it going!

Thank you so much! We're looking forward to all your feedback!
